Michelle Obama's Liberty Blue

Michelle Obama Liberty Blue Dress

Yesterday President Obama hosted a State Dinner for French president Francois Hollande. First Lady Michelle Obama hosted this magnificent Carolina Herrera gown. To say I'm obsessed with this gown is a bit of an understatement. It fits beautifully, and the lace overlay top is exquisite. What really stands out to me is the color, Liberty Blue. It's darker than periwinkle, and doesn't have the purple undertones of hydrangea blue. I want to wrap myself in this color like a blanket. I want to paint myself Liberty Blue. Since I haven't made it to Lowe's yet for a bucket of paint, I looked for this lovely blue online. It's hard to find. I came up with some potential winners and the blue shade isn't quite there but it's probably about as good as it's going to get. Of note: the Michael Kors mosaic print shift. I audibly gasped when I saw it. He has several dresses and blouses with the same print and I think I want them all.

Prep'd Picks // Work Shoes under $100

  photo PreppyWorkShoes_zps26628ffb.png

I have ruined at least four pairs of shoes in the past two weeks. I try to be careful, but from stepping into a puddle of water over my ankles (my car broke down and I didn't have a choice), getting caught in sudden downpour of very cold rain, and others suddenly developed holes. I also broke a heel walking down the hall of my office last week. I just can't win. I've always been hard on shoes so I've never liked spending a lot of money on them. If I destroy a pair of $50 flats, I don't feel too bad. If I had destroyed a pair of $150 flats, I'd hate myself.

Here are some of my absolute favorites that I've been drooling over.

I can vouch for the comfort and quality of Tommy Hilfger's shoes. I have an adorable pair of pink colorblock penny loafers that I can't wait to pull back out come spring. Land's End also makes good, comfortable shoes. The Cole Haan shoes are made with Nike Air technology and I've heard nothing but pheonmenal reviews. J.Crew Factory can be a bit tricky in their listings. Make sure the shoes are real leather, I bought several pairs of flats that I thought were leather but ended up being polyurathane and didn't last six months. Had I bought the red pair instead of the black, they would have been real leather. That was a frustrating experience.

There are some really nice options out there in the under $100 price range and you don't have to look too hard. I saved you some time and found some of the best:

Prom?

I received an email today from a young lady looking for a preppy, plus size prom dress. Seeing as I last attended a prom a little over ten years ago, I'm not quite sure I'm qualified to give prom dress shopping advice. I'm unsure of the age demographics for the blog, so I'll wait to see if there's interest. I don't want my advice to come off as stodgy and I know the post will require more work than a normal post.  If you'd like to see a post like this, just leave a comment, email me, or find me on Twitter.

(But in case you're wondering, I would consider the dress above preppy. It doesn't show a lot of skin, has a beautiful shape and color, and just enough detail to be interesting but not gaudy.)

Looking for Plus Size Lilly Pulitzer?

So far, the single largest driver of traffic to Prep'd comes from folks looking for plus size Lilly Pulitzer. I addressed this with one of the first posts on this blog, featuring what I call Lilly-a-Likes. Since Lilly only goes up to a size 16, I've looked for clothing that I think would fit in well with the Palm Beach aesthetic.  It could bright colors or a cheerful print but I've rounded up some of the best picks and dedicated a page to them. If you look in the address bar up top, you'll see a page marked LAL, which stands for Lilly-a-likes. I also added a cute button in the left sidebar you can use as well.
If you head over to the LAL page you'll find a widget you can scroll through with the latest picks. I plan on updating it about once a week. Spring lines are starting to come out so more will be added to the widget as the month rolls on.

Prep'd Picks // For Now & Later

About two weeks ago or so I had cleaned out a bit of my wardrobe while doing four loads of laundry (New Year's Resolution: not kept). I've also been going through my accessories and have gotten rid of probably 60-70% of them. It's a style area I've long neglected. I couldn't wear jewelry to my job for the past five years due to safety issues so I maybe had a handful of cheap scarves and costume jewelry. I threw it all out because it was falling apart or just looked bad. I can replace them for not a lot of coin which means more cash into the house fund.

Plus size preppy accessories

Row One//
Leather clip-on bow// I love this so much. Like the name says, it's just a simple clip-on bow that would add so much to a OCBD or a simple tee. However, this one is from Saint Laurent and costs a few hundred dollars. I'm pretty confident I can make this with ribbon or any other material I choose.
Phone case// I like phone cases as much as the next person but for the life of me I hate paying for them. These silicon cases from J.Crew Factory are colorful and are under $20 with shipping.
Infinity scarf// The colors on this scarf would go well with 80% of my closet.

Row Two//
Anchor necklace// A bit of a rustic take on the traditional anchor necklace.
Flat booties// I've been alternating my Sebagos and Wallabees for most of the winter, but I think these flat booties would be a much more stylish choice.
Fish hook necklace// In the same vein as the anchor necklace, it's a unique look for a delicate necklace.

Row Three//
Burberry polish// Pinks are probably my favorite polish color and this color straight from Burberry's Spring/Summer 2014 runway would be right at home in my collection.
Matte palette// I'm not a fan of sparkle in makeup. This palette contains several eyeshadows, blush, and liner making it perfect to toss in my bag when I'm running late for work.
Essie polish// This peach polish looks like a nice way of incorporating color into my otherwise muted winter palette.
